What does AMERICAN RAIL BIKE ADVENTURES do exactly?

We provide custom made rail bikes that operate by pedal on railroad tracks.

Who is eligible to ride on the rail bikes?

Riders must be at least 3 feet tall. Minors (those under 18 years of age) must be accompanied by at least one person age 18+ on the same rail bike. Maximum weight limit of 280lbs per rider. Infants must be secured in a car seat, chest harness, or papoose.

How many seats does each bike have?

Each rail bike has 4 seats. The bikes can be operated with anywhere from 1 to 4 people pedaling. Not all seats need to have people pedaling just 1 person needs to pedal.

Are lap riders permitted?

No. Each person riding the rail bike must have their own seat. This includes children.

Is there a weight limit?

Maximum weight for a rider is 280lbs.

Are reservations required?

Yes, you must make a reservation via our web site (we are usually sold out so if you show up with no reservation we may not be able to rent you a bike).

How much does it cost to rent a rail bike?

The cost depends on the location. See the location’s internal web pagefor details. Tickets are sold for the rental of the entire bike, not per person.

What is the cancellation and refund policy?

In order to obtain a full refund, we must receive a notice of cancellation a minimum of 3 days before your scheduled date. No-shows will not be given a refund. Please see our cancelation policy page.

What is the rain or weather policy?

In light rain the tours will commence. In heavy rain, dangerous weather, or when there is lighting, the tours will be canceled. Riders may reschedule or opt for a full refund.

Can we bring our cell phones and cameras?

Yes and we encourage you to take as many photos and videos of your adventure as you like. Our rail bikes have storage baskets for your personal belongings.

Can I bring pets, emotional support animals, or service dogs?

Service dogs (dogs trained to perform a task for a blind or handicapped person) and small pet dogs are permitted, however, it is up to the dog’s owner to properly secure the dog on the rail bike. 

How long is each rail ride?

Most of our rail ride adventures are approximately 1.5-2 hours.

Who controls the brakes on the rail bikes?

Each rail bike has a hydraulic brake system that is operated by a brake handle. One rider will be designated as the brakeman. The brakeman must be 16 years of age. 

Are rail bikes difficult to pedal?

Not at all. Our rail bikes are geared to be very easy to pedal. In addition, our rail bikes have battery operated pedal assist motors that make going up grade very easy.

Do we have to worry about trains and rail traffic?

No. Our rail bikes operate on their own schedule when trains are not running. Trains and rail bikes will not operate on the same track concurrently.

Is it dangerous to cross roadways?

No. Before our rail bikes cross a roadway, a flagman will stop all automobile traffic. Flagmen are present even when a road crossing is protected with flashing lights and gates.

How fast  can rail bikes travel?

Our speed limit is 10mph. Each excursion has a point bike that all other bikes must follow. This point bike will restrict its speed to 10mph so all trailing bikes must pace it at that speed.
